Somerville College, Oxford

History

Somerville College was founded in 1879 as one of the first colleges for women. It was named after the mathematician Mary Somerville and was called to 1894 Somerville Hall. It was the first college, the applicant underwent no religious tests and non- Anglican students recorded.

Since 1994, men are also allowed, which now represent about half of the approximately 480 students.

The college is best known for its library, in which it is the second largest college library of the university.

Indira Gandhi Centre for Sustainable Development

2013, a contract for the construction of the Centre was completed by the College, which provides for a £ 19 million new building expensive by the year 2017. On the 100th birthday of Indira Gandhi, the Centre should be completed. India participated in the total costs £ 3 million and the college and the university with 5.5 million pounds. The tasks of the Centre include research in the areas of food safety and environmental awareness. For the first five Indian researchers and managers should each receive scholarships.
