Somiedo Natural Park

The Parque Natural de Somiedo is a Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve in the northern Spanish region of Asturias. It has an area of 291 km ² and its highest elevation, the mountain El Cornon with an altitude of 2,194 m dar. The nature park is not entirely uninhabited. There are an estimated 1,500 people. In this Natural Park, the largest brown bear population lives in Spain with a number of about 160 animals.

Somiedo is part of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere project, which is concerned with integrating settlements with low population density according to strict ecological rules in nature. In the Nature Park Somiedo lead people for years an ecologically oriented life and created by a mixture of pristine nature and cultural landscape in which many plants and animals could settle herein, including next to the brown bear also Pyrenean chamois, wild boar and wolves.

The nature park is not unknown in alpine tourist and finds it in most guidebooks on northern Spain mention as a special area for hiking.
