History

The place Sommerau was first mentioned in a 1271 document in which the citizens of Trier Johann Walram the location that appears in the document as " Sernauwe " exchanged for other possessions that go to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier.

On June 12, 1303 Johann Walram receives a parchment certificate by the Archbishop Diether von Nassau ( ~ 1250-1307 ), to whom he sold his house and his castle Sommerau with all the surrounding estates for 300 pounds small Turnosen. In addition Walram house and castle receives as Kurtrierisches fief for himself and his heirs back (even the female succession and the side of relatives agreed, after a feud is excluded ). As witnesses and guarantors seal the Trier Johann von Rimberg, Hermann von Helfenstein and Peter von Eich, Schultheiss to Koblenz, and the St. Pauline scholastics Theodoric and Johanns brother Frederick the contract.

Important point of the deed is - at least from the perspective of the Archbishop - the power conferred on it opening right. The Archbishop or his delegated by him is so that officials Sommerau castle for peaceful and military purposes any time. The Archbishop will be able not only to his country seven castles - including the Grimburg and Saar castle - recourse but to an ever -thickening web of open Lehnburgen as indispensable pillars of his rule. Especially Nassau successor Baldwin of Luxembourg (1307-1354) uses this system of castle acquisition for further shaping and solidifying his kurtrierischen territory.

With the investiture be Walram Johann and his heirs vassals of the Archbishop and Elector with corresponding obligations (also a military nature ). On the other hand, of course, is the chance of a rise in high-ranking court offices.

From the context, however, the supplementary agreement falls due to a possible claim for damages against Johann Walram. The reason is the previously discharged feud between Count Henry of Luxembourg and the city of Trier. Count Henry of Luxembourg, the future Emperor Henry VII planned the establishment of a presumably intended as a customs station and solid structure on an island in the Moselle Grevenmacher. Citizens of Trier ( among them Johann Walram ) attacked, dragged the new building and ravaged several farms on Luxembourg territory. In the summer of 1300, Count Heinrich led by a successful counterattack against Trier and the surrounding area.

In the 1302 agreement between the city of Trier and the Count of Luxembourg peace treaty claims settlement is agreed to Johann Walram is committed with 200 pounds of Luxembourg denarii. Walram can be the archbishop to take over the half of this sum assure damage in the event that it is actually required to pay.
