Somoza family

The Somoza clan was a family that determined the policy of Nicaragua in the period 1934-1979 by means of dictatorial power. It represents several times the country's president, but was based entirely in their power to those created by Anastasio Somoza García, Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua, which was almost constantly under its direct command or commanded by informants. Because of their anti-communist stance, the family was supported most of the time their rule of the United States.

During their rule a huge fortune was of her purchased with partial utilization of the strong need of the population (eg absorption of international aid after the earthquake in 1972 ), so that the family at the end of the 1970s, the Nicaraguan economy dominated.

1979, Somoza was after several years of civil war, where the National Guard was going on in disregard of human rights against opposition forces, driven from power and from the country.

The members of the Somoza family were:

  • Bernabé Somoza, rebel in the 19th century
  • Anastasio Somoza García (1896-1956), President 1937-1947 and 1950-1956
  • Salvadora Debayle Sacasa (1895-1987), his wife Luis Somoza Debayle (1922-1967), president from 1956 to 1967
  • Isabel Urcuyo Rodríguez ( * 1924), his wife Alvaro Somoza Urcuyo
  • Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero ( born 1951 ), Nicaraguan general and commander of the National Guard until 1979
  • Marisa Celasco Somoza, his wife Hope Somoza Celasco, whose daughter
