Soncino, Lombardy

Soncino is a town with 7752 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Cremona in Lombardy.

Geography

The neighboring communities are Casaletto di Sopra, Cumignano sul Naviglio, Fontanella, Genivolta, Orzinuovi, Roccafranca, Ticengo, Torre Pallavicina and Villa Chiara.

History

In Soncino died on 1 October 1259 for a long time with the Swabians or Frederick II ( HRR ) allied condottieri Ezzelino da Romano. According to tradition, his body " all'ombra del campanile " was buried in the shadow of the main church.

Name and Location Soncino are also associated for all time with high-quality Hebrew printed products of the earliest time. Soncino was a family of Hebrew printers who had immigrated from Germany in the 15th century in Italy, Joshua Solomon Soncino, and his nephew Moses ben Gerson. They were the creator of first editions ( Bible, prayer book ...) and direction -giving expenses. Pope Leo X had indeed 1515 the Lateran Council a prior censorship of all printed works can be introduced, but these handled liberal compared to Hebrew Scriptures: So the Babylonian Talmud was first printed in Venice in 1523. Attractions

Soncino is a historical place which is still completely surrounded by a city wall from the 15th century. He is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. A major military monument is the Sforza with three square and a cylindrical tower. The Rocca was renovated in the 19th century by the architect and art historian Luca Beltrami.

Other buildings are:

  • The church of San Giacomo with a former Dominican convent and a wry, sometimes octagonal tower.
  • The Pieve di S. Maria Assunta from the 12th century
  • Palazzo Comunale with the Torre Civica;
  • The Casa degli Stampatori, in 1488 the first complete Hebrew Bible was printed with vokalisiertem text. According to this tradition, and the printer of the same family called himself a Jewish publishing house in London and New York Soncino Press; also, therefore, did the name of the German Friends of the Jewish book Soncino -Gesellschaft eV (1924-1937) for Bibliophilie.
