Songea Rural District

Songea Rural is one of five districts of the Ruvuma Region in Tanzania.

In the north it is bounded by the Morogoro Region, to the east by the Namtumbo district, on the south by the Songea Urban District and finally the west by the Mbinga district; to the northwest by the Iringa region.

In 1988, the provincial governor of Songea Rural Dr. Naleo N'ruvanu was arrested. Police found him at 98 tusks of African elephants. he was sentenced to 24 years in prison, but was released again after 2 years. The elephant tusks were publicly burned in the town of Songea. The district had 147 924 inhabitants in 2002.
