Songea is a city in and the capital of southern Tanzania Ruvuma region.

History

Between 1905 and 1907, was the site with its surroundings one of the focal points of the Maji Maji War in German East Africa.

Under King ( Nduna ) Songea, after the establishment and subsequent Songea town is named, next to Chabruma the first leader of the Ngoni was (see Nguni ), who joined the Maji Maji freedom movement. The freedom fighter was injured, captured and hanged on February 27, 1906 with other members of a unit of German Marines under Major John.

Religion

The city is the seat of a Catholic archbishop.

About 20 km from Songea is the place Peramiho, with Abbey of the Missionary Benedictine Priory and the Missionary Benedictine Sisters.
