Sonny Burgess

Albert " Sonny " Burgess ( born May 28, 1931 in Newport, Arkansas) is an American rockabilly musician. He is considered one of the most famous rockabilly singer, and was one of the many Sun artists that emerged in the 1950s there.

Life

Childhood and youth

Born as Albert Burgess, named after his father, everyone called him soon " Sonny ". In high school, he first played in a band as a guitarist with Paul Waney (vocals), Ray Hubbard (bass) and the Kennedy Twins on the piano. 1948 Burgess graduated from high school and joined shortly thereafter by Freddie Hart later on. But after Burgess was conscripted into the army. His time in the military he served in Heidelberg.

After his release in 1953 he founded together with the old bandmates The Moonlighters. In 1954, Elvis Presley That's Allright Mama the first rockabilly titles appear, also Burgess and his band rock and roll and rockabilly pieces first took it into their repertoire. In October 1955, she then had the opportunity to play with Elvis at the Silver Moon Club together. Influenced by Elvis, the Moonlighters now called into The Pacers. Career

1956 Burgess and the Pacers traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to audition for Sam Phillips. Phillips was impressed by Burgess and his band took to his Sun Records. Their first single, We Wanna Boogie / Red Headed Woman was released in September of the same year. After an extensive tour with other Sun greats like Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Warren Smith and Roy Orbison they returned to Memphis and released their second single. All of their records sold well regionally, but Phillips did not have the money to market the titles nationwide. By 1959, Burgess remained at Sun, after the separation from the Pacers, his contract ended at Sun.

Thereafter Burgess member of Conway Twittys companion, whom he had also kennegerlernt at Sun. With him he worked until 1961. After a single on Abdur Records, he signed a contract with Razorback Records with his new band, the Kings. However, the music should be a pastime, as he had found in his brother- in sports business employment. Then he gave the music perfectly and worked the next 15 years in a company in St. Louis. As the rockabilly revival of the old Rockabillies gave the opportunity to perform again, Burgess initially remained in the background and worked on. It was not until ten years later he took a trip to England and local performances of his career again. He wrote again at Sun and stepped on again. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Europe 1999.

Today appear Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers newly formed again. In 2006, she appeared at the Newport Folk Festival on and are regularly represented at the Las Vegas Rockabilly Festival. They were taken into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2002.
