Manley Lanier " Sonny " Carter, Jr. ( born August 15, 1947 in Macon, Georgia, USA, † April 5, 1991 in Brunswick, Georgia, United States ) was an American astronaut He came in the crash of an aircraft of Atlantic Southeast. Training

Carter received from Emory University in Georgia in 1969 a bachelor's degree in chemistry and received his doctorate in medicine in 1973. From 1970 to 1973 he was a professional football player for the Atlanta Chiefs in the NASL.

His medical internship at Grady Memorial Hospital graduated from Carter in Atlanta. In July 1974 he joined the U.S. Navy and attended the airman medical school of the Naval Air Station Pensacola. After serving as a flight surgeon, he was trained in April 1978 in Beeville (Texas ) for naval aviation. In September 1982, he was allowed to attend the Navy Fighter Weapons School ( TOPGUN ). In June 1984, he received his degree as a test pilot from the Naval Test Pilot School.

Astronauts activity

In May 1984, he was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. After training as a mission specialist astronaut, he was employed in the office for the area of ​​spacewalks. At the time of his death, he was nominated as a Mission Specialist for mission STS -42.

STS -33

Carter launched on 22 November 1989 with the Space Shuttle Discovery on its first flight into space. During the flight, a satellite of the Defense Department has been suspended. After 79 orbits of the Discovery returned on November 27 back to Edwards Air Force Base.
