Sonoyta

Sonoita (also Sonoyta ) is the capital of the municipality of General Plutarco Elías Calles in the Mexican state of Sonora. It is located across from Lukeville, Arizona, United States. It has 12849 inhabitants ( 2010) and is situated on 400 meters. Neighboring towns are Orquidea Granja, El Pueblo, Serventi, Cubab and Lukeville. West of Sonoita is Gran Desierto de Pinacate.

History

1694 founded the Jesuits the mission " San Marcelo de Sonoyta ", which was destroyed on the night of 21st to November 22, 1751 during a revolt of the Pima Indians. The Jesuit priest Heinrich Resting was killed during the raid. Only five years later, in 1756, his body was recovered and buried by the missionary Ignaz Pfefferkorn. The mission was not re- directed. Only in 1771 could again be regularly held Christian worship. On the 250th anniversary of the death of suspension of Borsumer " Friends of Father Heinrich resting" built a memorial chapel in Sonoita. 2006 was the chapel is equipped with sacral masterpieces of the painter and sculptor Werner Schubert Deister. In Borsum, the birthplace of Resting, recalls a " Sonoyta Square " to the city.
