Sonsonate Department

Sonsonate is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and is located in the west of the country on the Pacific coast.

The capital of the department is the city of Sonsonate. Established on 12 June 1824 the department received its constitution on February 8, 1855.

In Sonsonate is the center of the Pipil culture. The name comes from the Nahuatl Sonsonate Mexico related Pipil language Nawat where Centzunat as much as " plenty of water " or " 400 rivers " means. The number 400 is called in Nahuatl word for centzontli, which corresponds Nawat the word sentzun ( centzun ); Nawat at ( Nahuatl atl ) means " water ".

One of America's oldest churches, the Church of St. James Sonsonate, came from 1613; it was demolished in March 2007 after damage by several earthquakes.
