Sony Optiarc

Sony Optiarc K. K. (Japaneseソニー オプティ アーク 株式会社, Soni Oputiāku kabushiki - gaisha, Eng. Sony Optiarc Inc.) was a manufacturer of optical drives.

History

The company was founded in April 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC under the name of Sony NEC Optiarc. Effective December 5, 2008 Sony took over the 45 per cent shares in the joint venture of NEC and was henceforth the sole shareholder. Since then the company still only Sony Optiarc called. In August 2012, it was announced that Sony was planning to abandon the production of optical drives. Sony Optiarc was then closed the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013.

Products

Products were both DVD / -R ( W) - as well as BD- ROM drives. Sony Optiarc provided, inter alia, Blu -ray drives for the Sony PlayStation 3 The naming schemes in the drives behaves as follows: DDU is available for DVD -ROM, AD stands for DVD-RW, BR for BD-ROM BC and BD Combo. With a Combo drive is a drive that only supports read the newer format and for the previous write. The next three digits indicate the generation, the design ( 5.25 " or slimline) and the speed class.
