Soo Line Railroad

The Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railway ( MSTP & SSM), today SOO Line Railroad, is an American railway company, whose main route network covering the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota and the northern part of Michigan. By purchasing later routes were added south of Chicago.

The name " SOO " is derived from the pronunciation of the town name Sault Ste. Marie from.

History

The first route ranged in 1888 from Michigan to North Dakota. The Company acquired in 1909 the Wisconsin Central. 1961 merged the MSTP & SSM with the subsidiaries Wisconsin Central Railroad and Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad. In this context, the name in Soo Line Railroad was changed.

1982 bought the Soo Line, the Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern. The Milwaukee Road was purchased in 1985. Then the entire route network has been optimized. Most previous sections of the Soo Line were to a newly established Wisconsin Central Ltd.. sold and the own operation will be handled by the routes of the old " Milwaukee Road ". The Soo was in turn bought out in 1990 by the Canadian Pacific. The Company is responsible for the U.S. operations as a 100 % subsidiary.
