Soothe My Sorrows Church

The Church of the Mother of God Icon " Soothe my sorrow " (Russian Храм в честь иконы Божией Матери " Утоли моя печали " ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the city of Saratov in Russia. The church was built from 1904 to 1906 in the center of the house of the Bishop of Saratov and Volsk.

History

From the consecration to return to the Church

The Church of the Mother of God Icon " Soothe my sorrow " was commissioned by the then Bishop Hermogenes. With the construction of the designed by Pyotr Mitrofanovich Sybin church was built in 1903 or 1904 began. It was completed two years later in 1906.

On 28 January 1930, the church was closed by decision of the Soviet regional administration. It remained, however - in contrast to most other churches in Russia - received almost in its original form. On May 23, 1948, the planetarium in the city was opened in the church building.

In the 1960s, the crosses were removed at the behest of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in all churches and chapels in Saratov. Bishop Pimen finally came in 1965 with the request closer to the city government of Saratov, the Church of the Mother of God icon to renovate " Soothe my sorrow " at the expense of the diocese. However, this was rejected because it had decided to renovate the planetarium itself. In addition, crosses were placed on the domes again.

Since the 1990s,

In 1990 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In the same year a small chapel was built next door, which was dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh.

2004 began the renovation of the Church, especially in the interior. After the church had found an iconostasis in the Old Russian style, it was placed inside instead of the lectern. From 2005 to 2006 a side altar was installed. In addition, the vaulted ceiling was reconstructed and erected a new baptismal font.

From 2006 to 2008 the external appearance was restored.

Architecture

It was designed by Pyotr Mitrofanovich Sybin based on the Moscow St. Basil's Cathedral. The cathedral has eight small domes, each of which differs in appearance and color from the others. They are symmetrically arranged around the tower.
