Sophia Eleonore of Hesse-Darmstadt

Sophie Eleonore of Hesse- Darmstadt ( born January 7, 1634 Darmstadt, † October 7, 1663 in Bingen home ) was by marriage Countess of Hesse- Homburg.

Life

Sophie Eleonore was a daughter of the Landgrave George II of Hesse- Darmstadt (1605-1661) from his marriage to Sophie Eleonore (1609-1671), daughter of the Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony.

She married on 21 April 1650 in Darmstadt her cousin, the Landgrave Wilhelm Christoph of Hesse- Homburg ( 1625-1681 ). On the occasion of her wedding, Sophie Eleonore received from her father office and castle Bingen home. Wilhelm Christoph preferred Bingen home from his residence Homburg and his family lived mostly there, which is why he was also called the Landgrave of Hesse -Bingen home. Subject to the sovereignty Bingenheim was assured also the male descendants of Sophie Eleonore and Wilhelm Christoph; but only two survived daughters of the marriage her father.

After Wilhelm Christoph's death it came to a dispute over Bingenheim between Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse -Homburg, which eventually won the Darmstadt regent Elisabeth Dorothea for themselves.
