Sophie of Mecklenburg (1481–1503)
Sophie, Duchess of Mecklenburg, and Sophia ( born December 18, 1481 † July 12, 1503 in Torgau ) was Duchess of Mecklenburg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony.
Life
Sophie was the third of seven children and the second daughter of Duke Magnus II and his wife Sophie of Pomerania. On March 1, 1500 she married Duke Johann the Steadfast of Saxony.
From this marriage came forth a son:
- John Frederick I (1503-1554), Elector of Saxony
Shortly after the birth of their son died Sophie. She was buried in St. Mary's Church of Torgau. Your bronze grave plate was made in the Nuremberg workshop of Peter Vischer the Elder on a design by Jacopo de ' Barbari.

In Memory of Her donated Johann and his brother Frederick the Wise, one of Saint Anne and the Fourteen Holy Helpers consecrated altar, which was inaugurated on 19 July 1505. The altarpiece they gave at Lucas Cranach the Elder in order. Since the beginning of the 20th century is a triptych in Frankfurt's Städel showing the Holy Family, considered this Torgau altar. A panel Cranach the crowded presentation of 14 helpers remained in Torgau, and is now placed behind the grave.
