Sophron

Sophron [ Σώφρων ] of Syracuse was a Greek poet. He lived in the 5th century BC in Sicily.

Work

His pieces were crudely comic prose scenes without scenery in costumes, but without mask recited. This was held to be realistic, everyday life taken from individual scenes in which some men, some women (the only ) occurred. The language was rhythmic prose. As far as their content is visible, puns, parodies, and especially slapstick played a major role.

For its artistic quality of Plato testifies enthusiasm for these pieces, whose texts he is said to have brought to Athens. The pieces are all lost, only individual items are known: the farmer, the tuna, the mother, the menders, The Mondbeschwörerinnen etc. They served Theocritus as a model. Apollodorus of Athens wrote a four-volume commentary. The resulting fragments are mostly obtained by lexicographers and dialect researchers.
