Sorø Academy

Soro Akademi (Latin Academia Sorana ) in Soro on the island of Zealand is one of the oldest schools in Denmark.

History

It was created in 1586 in the wake of the Reformation from the established by Bishop Absalon of Lund 1146 Cistercian monastery Soro as the Latin School and in 1623 as a Knight Academy for the very compact aristocracy in Denmark.

The initially used by the school medieval monastery buildings fell in the middle of the 18th century a large fire victim, so that has been preserved of the buildings of the monastery of little more than the former monastery church Soro. The gatehouse of Soro is one of the oldest still inhabited houses in Denmark. Here Saxo Grammaticus wrote already in the Middle Ages his famous chronicle Gesta Danorum.

The reconstruction of the school was not only immaterial, but funded by the Danish writer Ludvig Holberg also with the entire use of his personal assets, since he had no descendants and heirs.

The school is now in the assets of a foundation and today still has an attached boarding school, which is attended by about 140 of a total of 470 students.
