Sordariales

Chaetonium sp.

The Sordariales are an order of Ascomycota. The majority of the species colonized wood and dung.

Features

The fruiting bodies are relatively large, they occur at or penetrate the surface of the substrate. The fruit body wall consists of large cells. In some species paraphyses occur, as well subapikale globules in the asci. The ascospores are varied, ranging from cylindrical, hyaline spores up to ellipsoidal, brown spores, often with attachments or vaginal. In many species, Anamorphic, where they occur missing, it can be easily pigmented, phialidic, Phialophora -like anamorph. In some species the ascospores germinate directly from to phialides.

System

Zhang et al. were able to show for the first time in 2006 that the Sordariales probably are a monophyletic group. To order the following families are counted ( with selected genera and species ):

  • Chaetomiaceae with 15 genera
  • Lasiosphaeriaceae with 27 genera Podospora and
  • Cercophora are both polyphyletic.

A further 20 species are at Eriksson assigned to any family.
