Sorgono

Sorgono is a place in the province of Nuoro in the Italian region Sardinia with 1740 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Sorgono is located 68 km southwest of Nuoro and is the terminus of the narrow gauge railway line Isili - Sorgono which is traveled during the summer months from Trenino Verde. Nearby are the stone rows and standing stones of Biru e ' Conca. The country Sanctuary of San Mauro in Gothic- Aragonese style is located seven kilometers from Sorgono on the slopes of Monte Lisai.

The Sagra

The Feast of San Mauro is the most important in Sorgono. The always celebrated on the last Sunday in May Festival, has been postponed to the first week starting in September 2005.

Among the events of the special festival is also the Palio of San Mauro. A train and an arena for the horse racing were built at the foot of the hill, which is dominated by the Church. Sardinian songs and dances on the village square, tasting of local agricultural products, buying craft products (glass, leather, ceramics ) and exhibits on the Sanctuary and the ancient traditions are included.

In the first half of the 20th century the festival was divided into three parts:

  • In January, the celebration " San Mauro the dolori " was celebrated (San Mauro of pain). This festival was dedicated to rheumatism sufferers.
  • The day after Easter Monday " San Mauro dei fiori " (flowers) was celebrated
  • End of May, " San Mauro Prospero " celebrated a festival of farmers of the village.

By the middle of the 20th century, the Feast of San Mauro took nine days. On this occasion, three days were a market for cattle, horses and sheep of the dedicated to the breeders of the island attracted.

The neighboring municipalities are Atzara, Austis, Belvì, Neoneli (OR), Ortueri, Samugheo (OR), Tiana and Tonara.
