Soriano is a department in Uruguay.

Geography

It is in the west of the country, on the border with Argentina, which forms the Río Uruguay. To the north it borders on the department of Río Negro, south is the Nachbardepartamento Colonia and in the east it is bounded by Flores. Soriano has a slightly hilly relief. From northwest to southeast, the department is crossed by the Cuchilla del Bizcocho that acts there as a watershed between the basins of the Río San Salvador and the Río Negro.

Population and settlement structure

While in 2004 84 563 inhabitants were counted, was found in the context of the census of 2011, population 82 595. Of these, 40 853 men and 41 742 women. The capital Mercedes has 42 032 inhabitants ( as of 2004) and is located on the Rio Negro near its confluence with the Río Uruguay. It is an old colonial city that is a popular tourist center in the summer because of its location on the river.

The second most important town is a little further south to Dolores, a port city with 15,753 inhabitants ( 2004). Nearby points Soriano cities Cardona, Chacras de Dolores, José Enrique Rodó, and Palmitas Villa Soriano.

Soriano has a total of nine secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 5,896 students are taught by 566 teachers. The oldest Liceo of the department is based in the Department of Capital Mercedes, 1903, founded the Liceo N ° 2 " Luis Alberto Zanzi ". (As of December 2008)

Policy

The leadership of the executive branch of the department, the Office of Intendente, holds Guillermo Besozzi of the Partido Nacional.
