History

Sorin is an acronym for Societa Ricerche Impianti Nucleari (Society for Nuclear Research). It was founded in 1956 by Fiat and Montedison to allow in Italy, the commercial use of nuclear energy. At the time the company had no ambitions to engage in the medical field.

With the nationalization of the energy supply in Italy, the company changed its name to Sorin Biomedica (Fiat Group). The company's focus now was no longer on the nuclear research but on technology development in the context of medical technology. In 1992, Sorin Biomedica, Shiley, the Cardiovascular Devices Division of Pfizer acquired. Germany

In Munich, medical devices ( heart -lung machine, autotransfusion systems ) are developed and manufactured. The present site with 9000 m² of land was obtained on 24 November 2000.

The origins of the Sorin Group Germany GmbH go back to August Stöckert. The company employed from 1940 onwards, with the repair and custom-made surgical instruments. In 1973, the development and production of the first modular cardiopulmonary bypass machine was started and the foundation of the " Stockert Instrumente GmbH & Co. Italy

Canada

In Burnaby, the Group employs approximately 250 employees. The company was founded in Canada in 1982. Prior to the acquisition by the Sorin Group, the company operated under the name Carbo Medics. As at the site in Saluggia heart valves are manufactured here.

Brazil

In Sao Paulo, heart -lung machines, oxygenators and tubing sets for the South American market are manufactured.

Competitive environment
