Sorin Matei

Sorin Matei ( born July 6, 1963 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian high jumper.

Career

Matei participated in three Olympic Games (1980 in Moscow, Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992 ) as well as two outdoor World Championships ( 1983 in Helsinki and 1987 in Rome) part.

Matei was not necessarily a winning jumper in major international championships. His greatest achievement was winning the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992 behind the Swede Patrik Sjöberg. Mateis outdoor personal best of 2.40 meters, set on June 20, 1990 in Bratislava, also meant a national record of 2.38 meters as his Hallenbestmarke, which he set up in Wuppertal in 1995.

Matei is one of only nine athletes who jumped in her career outdoors over 2.40 meters. He ranks with his best performance on a shared fifth place of eternal outdoor worlds best list, while his Hallenbestleistung ranges from 2.38 m to 13th place ranking of the hall.

At a size of 1.84 m his competition weight was 71 kg.

On 26 April 2007 Matei was elected to succeed Ilie Floroiu to the top of the Romanian Athletics Federation.

Special

Unlike many other - larger - world-class ski jumpers of his generation, Matei distinguished mainly by a strong, double-sided use of the arms in the take-off phase. He is known worldwide as one jumper who has his height at the highest skipped.
