Sorochinsk

Sorochinsk (Russian Сорочинск ) is a Russian city with 29 249 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Orenburg Oblast.

Location

Sorochinsk is located near the western foothills of the Ural Mountains on the left bank of the river Samara, about 170 km north- west of the regional capital Orenburg. The nearest town is Busuluk, located 70 km north west of Sorochinsk.

History

Sorochinsk 1737, then still in the middle of a vast steppe landscape, as a fortress called Sorotschinskaja krepost ( Сорочинская крепость ) was founded. The name comes from the small Samara Creek Soroka, which literally means " magpie ". During the Pugachev peasant uprising in 1774, the fortress could not stop the rebels and was devastated by them. Later, though rebuilt, Sorochinsk but soon lost its importance as a point of defense.

After a railway line along the Samara was moved in 1876, which also passes Sorochinsk, flourished in the place on the trade, and later also the industry. End of the 19th century Sorochinsk already had more than 5000 inhabitants.

1945 Sorochinsk received city rights. In the 1970s, oil and gas fields were developed near the city.

Economy and Transport

Apart from oil and gas production today, the processing of agricultural production and the food industry plays an important role in Sorochinsk.

The city is located on the highway M5 and on the railway line Samara - Orenburg. The main train station is named after the old place names Sorotschinskaja.
