Sortavala

Sortavala (Russian Сортавала, Finnish Sortavala Sortavala Swedish ) is a town in the Republic of Karelia and belongs since 1944 to Russia. It lies on the northern tip of Lake Ladoga and has 19,235 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

The town was first mentioned in documents to Swedish in 1468. The settlement began around 1582, the town was chartered Sortavala the year in 1632. From the beginning of the 19th century until 1917, the town belonged to the Grand Duchy of Finland, from 1917, the independent Finland, before it had been re- assigned from Peace reasons after the Second World War on Russia.

Near the town there is a small national park and a waterfall. Sortavala has put a dock on Lake Ladoga, from which ships tourists and pilgrims to Valaam Island.
