Sostenuto

Sostenuto (Italian for "held" for abbreviated as " sost. " or " sosten. " ) refers to a music performance instruction. The tones are to be kept longer and finish, usually with a simultaneous deceleration of the tempo. Often these game instruction is used as an additive to a tempo indication (or as a set of header ).

For example, should a piece of paper with the statement Adagio sostenuto played a bit wider than an adagio, and legato. In addition, the sounds get more weight, the phrasing is longer.

The middle pedal of a piano in the shape of a wing is its function as often referred to as a sostenuto pedal, as this, as opposed to the right pedal, which lifts all the dampers, only the shock of the string you played restrains.
