Souad Massi

Souad Massi (Arabic سعاد ماسي, DMG Su ʿ Ad Massi, born August 23, 1972 in Bab El Oued -, a district of Algiers ) is an Algerian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose ethno-rock music is distinguished by most diverse sound effects.

Biography

Souad Massi grew up in modest circumstances in their Kabyle parents. Although Souad Massi took an early interest in music, it was far from clear that it would really make later music. On the one disapproved of the father - an engineer - the ambitions of his daughter, on the other hand, it is generally difficult to enforce in Algeria as a musician. That's why she wanted to be as a child, a boy. They then had a penchant for Western films and thus also for country and folk music. Later, she also discovered her passion for many other genres such as rock, flamenco and Indian film music.

Souad Massis older brother supported them over and over again in terms of music, and with his help she could take guitar lessons. She began to write poems, and soon they combined these two things together.

Her first stage experience she gained with 17 years as a member of a flamenco group. She also studied urban planning at a university in Algiers and worked after graduation in an architectural office. In 1997 she joined the hard rock band Atakor in which was also her brother, and was relatively successful in Algeria. At that time the government tried, however, to censor the music scene, so bands could be difficult to occur in public. Souad Massi felt hemmed thereby. When she was invited in January 1999 to Femmes d' Algérie Music Festival in France, she wowed the audience right away, and she decided to stay in France.

In summer 2001, she released her debut album Raoui ( " The Storyteller "), which attracted great attention in France and earned her a nomination for Best Newcomer at the World Music Awards at the BBC. Deb ( " Heartbroken " ) was their second album. Although it is well known in Europe and North America, their music in North Africa and the Middle East will only be observed gradually stronger.

Souad Massis songs are largely autobiographical and influenced by many different musical styles and influences, such as flamenco or the American folk-rock, but also typical sounds of Arabic music. She sings in Arabic, French, from time to time in Kabyle language.
