Soul Asylum

Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band that is particularly made ​​famous by the hit Runaway Train in 1992.

Band History

Soul Asylum was established in 1983 as a successor to the 1981 by Dan Murphy (guitar ), Karl Mueller (bass) and Dave Pirner (drums) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, founded band Loud Fast Rules; the band's name was a nod to the loud and fast hardcore punk, the, the band played. In the founding year of Soul Asylum Grant Young was a drummer in the band; Pirner moved it to the guitar and took over the vocals. The first album Say What You Will, Clarence ... Karl Sold The Truck appeared in 1984 on the label Twin / Tone. After two more releases and tours, the band in 1988 got a record deal with the major label A & M and released two albums there, Hang Time and Soul Asylum And the Horse They Rode In On. This sold poorly and the band thought to dissolve. To make matters worse, that they had lost their major contract and their slow change of style to more melodic tones reputation in the indie rock camp. At times, Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner played with even in the Minneapolis supergroup Golden Smog.

In 1990 the band got a new recording contract, this time with Columbia Records. Because of their previous commercial failure Pirner and Murphy went as Murphy and Pirfinkle on an acoustic tour through North America, during which she also wrote new songs and played. These songs were for the next album of the band, Grave Dancers Union, recorded, released in 1992. This album was a huge commercial success and earned several platinum records. The single Runaway Train rose in the U.S. charts at # 5; the album debuted in the album charts at No. 11 in the music video for Runaway Train were to see photos of missing children. Some of these children were actually recovered and reunited with their families. In 1994, Soul Asylum for this single won a Grammy for best rock song. On 20 January 1993 the band played at the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Grant Young left after the recording of Grave Dancers Union left the band and was replaced by Sterling Campbell, who had already recorded on the album a lot of the drum parts. 1995 saw their second album Let Your Dim Light Shine, which although was able to place up to # 6 on the album charts, but overall was not as big a success as its predecessor. During this time the band made, in particular Dave Pirner because of his relationship with Winona Ryder, in other areas headlines. Because of this affair and resolution were rumors that however proved unfounded.

As a result, it was around the band a little quieter. They released another album, a best-of collection and a live album. Since they are friends with film director Kevin Smith, they were also on the soundtracks of his films, particularly Chasing Amy to hear. In 2004 it was announced that bassist Karl Mueller is suffering from throat cancer. As a result, there was some benefit concerts for him, so he could pay his medical bills. On one of these concerts in Minneapolis in October 2004, played some of the most famous names of the Twin Cities: Paul Westerberg, the Gear Daddies and Bob Mould, who stood for two songs with his former partner in Hüsker Dü, Grant Hart, on the stage. Since Mueller was at the time of the concert in relatively good shape, he was also with Soul Asylum on stage. Later they took together on another album; However, the cancer returned and Mueller died in June 2005.

In June 2006, the album The Silver Lining, which contained new material 8 years after the release of Candy From A Stranger appeared. The album was recorded before Mueller's death, so that the bass parts were not recorded by him. On drums worked as a new member with the band Michael Bland.
