Soulfly

Soulfly is a metal band existing since 1997. It was founded by Max Cavalera after he left due to internal disputes in 1996 his previous band Sepultura. While mostly Nu Metal was played on the first three albums, the style for the album Prophecy in 2004 is the latest re- amplified in the direction of Thrash / Groove Metal, reminiscent of the music of Sepultura.

History

The band originating from Brazil Metal musician Max Cavalera completed Roy Mayorga on drums ( previously worked with the band Thorn ), Jackson Bandeira on guitar (previously at Chico Science) and the already known Marcello D. Rapp Sepultura on bass. Max Cavalera is next to his vocalist position also on the guitar works, still he is the driving and often also exporting power in the use of more unusual instruments such as the berimbau and an electric sitar.

In this way, the band leader of his vision of a kind of world music in rock-like robe tries to approach with no prescribed limits. He wants to lead the band " with the idea of a combination of diverse sound with spiritual inspiration ." The debut album Soulfly released in 1998 and reached number 82 in the U.S. Billboard charts. After extensive tours Joe Nunez took over the place behind the drums.

A significant influence of the Nu Metal made itself felt on the second album, Primitive ( 2000). Result of the previous media hype around this new brand of Metals and a variety of guest musicians (including Tom Araya of Slayer, Slipknot Corey Taylor and Sean Lennon), the album became the most successful in the band history. It reached # 32 on the Billboard 200 and number eleven in the U.S. independent charts.

Max Cavalera self-produced their third album with the label 3, which appeared in 2002, and came into the Billboard charts at # 46. On the publication, various reminiscences found to former thrash works and Roy Mayorga was back behind the drums. Although the album is generally called today with the digit " 3", but it must be noted that the sign is similar to the cover, although the digit, but actually an artistically designed shape of the spiritual is " Aum ".

For the fourth album Prophecy Max Cavalera recruited a completely new cast again and made it clear that is Soulfly for him no fixed band, but a constantly changing project only with him as a fixed constant.

Joe Nunez was now back on drums, Marc Rizzo (Ex - Ill Nino ) new to the guitar. The somewhat unusual instrumentation with two bass players (David Ellefson of Megadeth and Bobby Burns of Primer 55 ) Max Cavalera justified on the grounds that he needed experienced musicians from different areas for best possible realization of musical styles.

After multiple trips to Latin American musical realms, which were already to be found on the album Roots by Sepultura first time in all clarity, you can hear the results on Prophecy of a longer trip through Eastern Europe. There, Max Cavalera played with, among others with the Serbian hardcore band Eyes Burn, which even at the recording of the song of Moses - a lyrically debauched opinion on Max Cavalera's religious beliefs - participated. Prophecy was released on 30 March 2004 and made it to number 24 in the German charts.

The title of the published on 30 September 2005 fifth album, Dark Ages. It was taken in Arizona, Belgrade, Paris, Moscow and Istanbul and united again by a similar musical trip around the world as its predecessor Prophecy. For the first time members of the band had not changed between the two albums, only Dave Ellefson was no more than a second bassist on board. As is typical of Soulfly found at the Dark Ages again some guest musicians, such as Nemanja Kojic ( Song: Inner Spirit ), Paul Fillipenko and Billy Milano ( Molotov ), David Ellefson ( Riotstarter ) and Max Cavalera's stepson Richie Cavalera ( Stay Strong ). In general, the fifth work of Soulfly hear again reinforced by the former band Sepultura, music critics praised this partial return mainly without giving up their own characteristics Soulflys. In the German Metal Hammer Dark Ages was voted " Album of the Month ".

On 25 July 2008, published by Soulfly Conquer their sixth studio album. It was September 2007, recorded in the studios of their own bassist Bobby Burns. As on the previous albums, there are various guest musicians such as Dave Peters of Throwdown and David Vincent of Morbid Angel.

Burns ' place was initially occupied by Johny Chow, also bassist with Max Cavalera's other project Cavalera Conspiracy. On 30 June 2011, the band announced that they have with Tony Campos found a new bass player. Campos played previously in bands like Static-X, Prong and Ministry.
