Soumitra Chatterjee

Soumitra Chattopadhyay ( Bengali: সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়, Saumitra Caṭṭopādhyāẏ; born January 19, 1935 in Krishnanagar ) is an Indian actor. His name is closely associated with the film director Satyajit Ray, because he played in 14 of the 31 feature films. In addition to Uttam Kumar, he is the most famous actor of the Bengali film.

Life

Soumitra Chatterjee studied at the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta and literature began as a radio announcer and amateur actor. He made his film debut in 1959 together with Sharmila Tagore with the title role in Apur Sansar by Satyajit Ray, the last part of the Apu trilogy. Chatterjee is said to have a resemblance to the young Rabindranath Thakur and he also played in all the films of Ray's stories of the Bengali Nobel laureate - Teen Kanya ( Episode: Samapti ), Charulata, Ghare Baire. Especially popular in his home is his portrayal of the detective Feluda in Sonar Kella the children's films (1974) and Joi Baba Felunath (1978). Except with Ray, he also worked under the direction of Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Ajoy Kar 2001 he received the Special Jury Prize at the National Film Awards.

In addition to his film work for cinema and television Soumitra Chatterjee was always active in the theater as an actor, writer and director. He is known for his recitations of Bengali poetry.
