The sound flow, symbols q, unit m3 / s, is a sound field quantity in acoustics.
The volume velocity is obtained from the integral of the particle velocity v over a rang through area A, with only the directed perpendicular to the surface components of the particle velocity play a role:
The sound flow characterizes the volume of the transmission medium ( air) - caused by the sound pressure - per unit time ( 1 second) flows back and forth through an area A.
If all of the particles of the transmission medium to have a surface area A has the same sound velocity (speed) v, that is, when the rhythmic flow area A carried everywhere in phase, this can simplify the formula for the volume velocity:
This applies either where the area A is so selected that there has the sound velocity v everywhere the same phase (for example, on the surface of a sphere with a spherical sound source in the center ), or the flow cross- section, ie the dimension of the area A in each dimension is very small compared to the square of the wavelength.
Volume velocity and sound velocity are always in phase.
