Sound generator

An audio frequency generator is a device, which usually produces a sinusoidal, rectangular or saw-tooth electrical signal in the human audible frequency range, i.e., 20 to 20,000 Hz. It serves mostly as a measuring device.

Device variants

The devices are generally constructed such that the output signal is manually adjustable in both frequency and amplitude, to adjust the measurement signal by appropriate settings of the flexible requirements can.

Rare fixed frequency transmitters are used, which give a constant frequency ( eg, 800 Hz, or other standard frequencies) with a constant signal level ( eg, 0 dB).

A special form represent sweep generators that can continuously go through their entire frequency range in a time interval. Time interval, frequency range and level can be adjusted within wide limits.

All variants of a Tonfrequenzgenerators can also be replaced by a by a suitable computer program controlled sound card in the PC.

Use

Audio frequency generators are used for test and measurement purposes in the LF range, including in transmission technology, the acoustic instrumentation and electro-acoustics. They are employed in combination with a suitable Tonpegelmesser.

In the simplest case it can be seen with the fixed-frequency transmitter, whether the test tone by running a sound transmission system with the desired level and thus this is basically functional.

Adjustable generators permit beyond by manual recording of several or many level measurement values over the frequency range, the qualitative assessment of the frequency response of a transmission system.

The sweep, in conjunction with an oscilloscope as a level meter, the automatic frequency transition recording. The linearity of the transmission path on the frequency can be read directly from the screen.

In the electronic music sound generators are used for example in synthesizers for sound production.
