Geography

In essence, the district Soure is characterized by two landscapes. Firstly, the hilly parts of the foothills of the Iberian Mountain vagina, including the Serra do Sicó. Secondly, the flat parts of the territory, crossed by the rivers Ancos, Arunca and Pranto, with a varied landscape of forests ( oaks, eucalyptus, among other coniferous and deciduous trees ) and areas of extensive and intensive agriculture.

History

Archeological finds, particularly from the Neolithic period, show a long human habitation of the area as far back as prehistoric times. Economy

In the mountainous parts of quarries (eg lime) and the food industry operated (dry fruits and their processing ) and the traditional cheese making. Attractions

The Castle of Soure was the first headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal. The centrally located remains of the castle and its massive masonry house the municipal museum and the tourist office ( " Turismo "). The narrow river Ancos flows through the center Soures, past the park Parque da until it empties várzea, old bridges and an old water mill at the entrance to the Arunca. The city administration is centrally located in the building of the Paços de concelho (City Hall) housed with a small park in front of it. The building was built in the years 1902-1906 in the neo- Manueline style.

Something beneath the handsome courthouse is located next to the bus station and the market hall. There, in addition to fruit and vegetables and fish and meat are offered. In the main church S.Tiago, built in the 15th century by the future King Manuel I, various strange characters and historical documents are written in stone. The outside of the village lying, built in 1189 by hermits Rício Capela of Sao Mateus is a regional pilgrimage site, held to on his holiday (September 21 ) processions. Here you will find Manueline decorations, a damaged sculpture of the 16th century, but also Mudejar tiles from the 15th century.

In southern nature reserve Paul da Madriz, a wetland and bird sanctuary, wintering migratory birds can be observed. In Arunca and its reservoir Canoeing and Rowing is operated.

For the adjacent county Condeixa -a-Nova include the extensive Roman sites of Conimbriga.

Festivals and Events

Every two years there is a week of twinning, with varying events and mutual visiting delegations.

Traffic

Railway

Soure is located on the Linha do Norte, the important route from Lisbon to Porto, but here hold only regional trains, not the Alfa pendular and not the Intercidades. The handsome railway station is situated on the edge of the village and has been operating since the switch closure and adjustment of freight services only as a breakpoint.

Highways

Soure is 13 km along the national road 342 from Condeixa -a-Nova and its links with the A1.
