Soustons

Soustons is a French small town with 7318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Landes department in the region of Aquitaine. It is capital of the canton of the same name and is part of the community association Maremne Adour Côte- Sud.

Geography

Soustons is located in the Landes Forest, the largest contiguous forest in Western Europe, it consists mainly of pine trees. The region is called Marensin.

Neighboring communities of Soustons Azur are in the north and in the south of Seignosse. The city of Bayonne is located about 30 km to the southwest. About 10 kilometers west of the town lies the Atlantic coast, which is here called the Côte d' Argent.

North West of the city lies the great lake of Soustons. North West of the lake in the city forest of Soustons lies the hamlet Couderé belonging to the city, there is the homestead latches, had in the François Mitterrand (1916-1996) lived for several years.

In a public park on the lake of Soustons is a monument that represents François Mitterrand and his Labrador Retriever Baltic.

Museums

The Musée des Traditions et Vieux Outils ( Museum of Traditions and old tools ) at the Château de la Pandelle shows 950 exhibits on ancient craft professions such as wooden shoes, the Harz and the coopers.

Structures

  • The church of Saint -Pierre, built 1863-1867 in neo-gothic style. The bell tower is 35 meters high, the choir is richly decorated. The church was renovated in 2000.
  • The Bullring Soustons was built in 1903, it is used both for bullfighting events as well as for the performance of concerts.
  • The theater was built in 1933, the facade is decorated in the Art Deco style.
  • In Soustons is a LORAN - C transmitter. It uses a 213 -meter-high self-radiating mast as a transmitting antenna.

Economy

Major lines of business in Soustons are the timber industry, farming, vegetable growing and breeding of poultry. There is a cork factory and a nursery on site. Local culinary specialties include pigeon stew ( Salmi de palombe ) and sand wine.
