South African Party

The South African Party ( Afrikaans Suid - Afrikaanse Party ) was a party in South Africa that existed from 1911 to 1934. It was founded by two then dominant ethnic groups, the Boers and British settlers, shortly after the union of the four colonies Natal, Transvaal, Orange Free State and the Cape Colony, Union of South Africa by Jan Christiaan Smuts and Louis Botha. Emerging dissatisfaction with the economic policies of the SAP in the early 1920s culminated in 1922 in a general strike. The general strike was ended by negotiations and the use of the military. During the world economic crisis, the SAP was in opposition. On December 5, 1934, the SAP united with the National Party to the United National South African party with the intention of the British and the Afrikaners to reconcile.
