The South African Rugby Union ( SARU ) is the national sports body for rugby union in South Africa. It exists since 1992 and is a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB ). The SARU is responsible for the organization of gaming operations and national teams.

History

The association was founded on 23 May 1992 after the end of apartheid. It was created from the union of the approved only for white South African Rugby Board and the open for all breeds South African Rugby Union. The new organization was first called South African Rugby Football Union ( SARFU ) and increased in 2005 to its present name. First president of the association was the former national player and coach Danie Craven.

An important development in 1995 was the opening of the sport for professional players, the same year the World Cup was held in South Africa.
