South Australian Company

The South Australian Company was a corporation that was founded in the colonization of the south of Australia. It was planned to establish a new colony of South Australia. The Company was formed on October 9, 1835 resolved March 17, 1949; the management went to the Elders Trustee.

Founding partners were George Fife Angas, Thomas Smith and Henry Kingscote and after a short time, the Company had approximately 300 shareholders, among them were John Rundle, Charles Hindley, Raikes Currie, John Pirie and Henry Waymouth, whose names today are located on street signs in Adelaide.

In January 1836 four ships of England laid on behalf of the Company in the direction of Australia. The new arrivals built in July 1836 in South Australia the first European settlement in Kingscote on Kangaroo Iceland on. It turned out that this place is too small for this and was not suitable, so the settlement was for half a year later moved to the mainland in the vicinity of present-day Adelaide. The Company built the infrastructure for the new colony and sold or leased land to the immigrants, who wanted to settle there.

The South Australian Company had since 1841 a silver mine. Later they had copper mines leading to the Rapid Bay, with the Barossa Valley, Kapunda, Burra ( Kooringa ) and KANMANTOO. The Company was extremely successful in South Australia, because who bought 32 acres of farmland, this was 4000 square meters of land in the city. She not only deals with land, but it operated sheep breeding, wool sales, whaling and shipbuilding. In addition, they participated in the economic boom from 1845 through copper mining and the gold rush in Victoria in 1851 and 1852. During the times of economic recovery it deserved especially at the high rents which they demanded of tenants who were able to sell their agricultural products at high prices.

The Company was led in its early years of Samuel Stephens ( 1836-1837 ), David McLaren ( 1837-1841 ) and William Giles ( 1841-1861 ).
