South Governorate

The South Lebanon Governorate (Arabic الجنوب al - Dschanub, DMG al - Ǧanūb ) is one of six provinces in Lebanon with a population of about 350,000 people. The administrative headquarters is Sidon.

Geography

The South Lebanon Governorate covers an area of ​​about 2,000 km ². The lowest elevation is sea level of the Mediterranean, the highest elevation is about 1000 m high. The inhabitants are composed of Shiites, Sunnis, Orthodox, Catholics, Armenians, and Protestants. The temperatures drop to 4 ° C in winter, during which it rains a lot and in the higher elevations also snowing. The dry summer bring temperatures up to 30 ° C in the coastal areas. Rivers that flow through the province are Litani (the one on its course westwards is also called Qasmiye ), Zahrani, Naqura, Awali and Hasbani.

Economy

The region thrives on the production of citrus, tobacco, bananas and tourism, especially in the area of Tyre. Tourist attractions are the sandy beaches south of Tyre, the ancient Phoenician and Roman ruins in Tyre and Sidon, as well as a cultural festival in Tyre.
