South Miami is a city in Miami -Dade County in the U.S. state of Florida with 11,657 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

South Miami is located about 5 km southwest of Miami and is bordered by the municipalities Coral Gables and Pinecrest.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 11,657 inhabitants distributed to 5,174 households. The population density was 1942.8 inh. / Km ². 75.1 % of the population were white, 17.0% African American, 0.3% Native American and 3.9 % Asian Americans. 1.7% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.0% in different ethnic groups. 43.1 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 24.8 % of all households lived in 28.6 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 56.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.46 persons and the average family size is 3.16 people.

23.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 31.3 % were 20-39 years old, 27.7 % were 40-59 years old and 17.8 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 37 years. 49.1 % of the population were male and 50.9 % female.

The average annual income was $ 63,289, while 14.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 59.69 % of the population spoke Spanish 37.45% and 2.86 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

Through the city run the U.S. Highway 1 and Florida State Roads 5, 959, 976 and 986 South Miami also has a station on the suburban railway Miami -Dade Metrorail towards the city center and the airport of Miami. The Miami International Airport is located 9 kilometers north of the city.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 560 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There were three murders, two rapes, 33 robberies, 50 injuries, 126 burglaries, 668 thefts, 26 car thefts and one arson.
