South Nation River in Chesterville

The South Nation River (French Rivière Nation) is a right tributary of the Ottawa River in eastern Ontario in Canada.

It has its origin in the forests and swamps north of Brockville. From there, it flows 161 km in a north-easterly direction to the Ottawa River, it flows in the north of Plantagenet. Its catchment area is 3830 km ².

The river is called " South Nation River " to distinguish him from the almost eponymous river in Quebec, the flows coming from the north to the Ottawa River and " Petite- Nation River" or Rivière de la Petite Nation is called. The names of the two rivers are derived from the French name of the Indian tribe originally living here, the Weskarini, from.

The surrounding area of the river was originally covered with Weymouth pine forests. Today it is mainly used by agriculture.

The river drains an almost flat terrain. Due to the absence of a gradient, the waters tend to flooding. Dams and flood protection measures have therefore been established to reduce the damage caused by seasonal floods in the catchment area of the river.
