South of Market, San Francisco

South of Market ( SoMa for short ) is a neighborhood in San Francisco. This area got its name because it extends south of Market Street.

The district was built on the so-called Landfills. Here was originally a bay. In the 19th century there were anchored ships. In the time of the gold rush, there were hundreds of smaller and larger ships that were abandoned by their crew. Gradually you filled the bay with debris, so as to gain new space for the rapidly growing city.

South of Market initially consisted of warehouses, port and industrial facilities. The new development of this area began in the late 1970s to early 1980s with the construction of the conference center Moscone North Convention Center. In the 1990s, you went to the rehabilitation and created shopping, museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and chic lofts. During this time, the so-called dot-com companies settled preferred here because cheaper and trendy office space was available. Among the companies based in SoMa include CNET, Dropbox, Twitter, Airbnb, Zynga, Sega of America, Wired, TechCrunch and Yelp.
