Southern Christian Leadership Conference

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC ) is an American civil rights organization that fights for the rights of African-American population.

History

The SCLC was 1957 out of several protest groups that emerged in the wake of the Montgomery bus boycott 1955/56. The organization was in addition to the NAACP to one of the driving forces of the American civil rights movement. Among the leaders of the SCLC counted alongside its chairman Martin Luther King whose close associate Ralph Abernathy, who took over the presidency after King's assassination. Other well-known SCLC activists of the 60s were Maya Angelou and Andrew Young.
