Southern Thule

The Southern Thule Islands, sometimes only Southern Thule called (English South (ren) Thule), are a group of three small islands in the far south of the sub-Antarctic archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands, a few kilometers north of the 60th southern latitude located.

At the archipelago, the islands

• Bellinghausen
• Cook
• Morrell.

All three islands are uninhabited.

The archipelago was probably discovered in 1775 by the British navigator James Cook, who explored almost all the South Sandwich Islands at this time. The group's name is due to the former assumption of the discoverer, the islands formed the " edge of the world " (Latin Ultima Thule).

From 1976 to 1982, the island was occupied by Argentina. Only after the end of the Falklands War, on 20 June 1982, the remaining soldiers on the island surrendered to the British armed forces.
