Southfield is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population is 78 296. The city is located in the densely populated belt of suburbs to the U.S. automotive center Detroit.

History

The first settlers came from Birmingham and Royal Oak, Michigan, as well as from the states of New York and Vermont. The city was founded in 1823 by John Daniels. Among the founders were the families of Heth, Stephens, Harmon, McClelland and Thompson. The first establishment of townships on July 12, 1830. Southfield was after its location in the " southern regions " ( southfields ) of Bloomfield townships named. 1833 opened a post office, the first town hall was built in 1873. The population of the city grew mainly between 1950 and 1990, as residents moved downtown Detroit to the suburbs. In the 1970s, Southfield became home to a large Jewish population, built synagogues and schools in the city. While continuing the typical Northwest movement at the Detroit Jewish population, Southfield continues to be a diverse city. In the early 1990s, settled in Detroit African-Americans and, in smaller amounts, members of the Chaldean Catholic Church and ethnic groups with European and Asian background in the city.
