Southwestern Railways

The Piwdenno - Sachidna Salisnyzja (Ukrainian Південно - Західна залізниця; German about "South- Western Railway " ) is a regional railway company in western Ukraine with headquarters in Kiev and belongs to the Ukrainian railway company Ukrsalisnyzja.

The railway company operating the service networks in the Khmelnytsky oblasts, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Chernihiv and Vinnytsia oblasts, as well as parts of Rivne, Chernivtsi, Cherkasy, Poltava and Ternopil. In 2008 it comprised 4668 km railway line from which about 93 % were electrified, while 315 stations were operated. The rail lines are executed in Russian broad gauge (1520 mm). History

The railway history of Ukrainian territories of the Russian Empire began in the sixties of the 19th century. Later, a need for a connection between the central Russia (Moscow) and the port in Odessa was born.

The first railway line Odessa - Balta was 293 km long. It was built in 1862-1865 at state expense. The head of the construction work was the chamberlain, Baron von Ungern- Sternberg. Supervision and control were perceived by the Adjutant General Kozebu. As workers convicts and soldiers were used by criminal commands.

In May 1868 construction of the railway Kiev - Balta began as a continuation of the existing route. On June 7, 1870 was then commissioned and established as Russian Railways Southwest.

When the railway bridge was completed by the engineer Struve in Kiev in February 1870, operated the Kursk - Kiev railway, which reached 1868, the opposite bank of the Dnieper the Kiev railway station.

By 1876 the routes Schmerynka - Wolotschysk and Berdychiv - Stary Krywyn were built. From 1890 to 1897 was followed by the commissioning of the routes Schmerynka - Mohyliw - Podilskyj, Kosjatyn - Uman, Chrystyniwka - Shpola, Berdychiv - Zhytomyr. On January 1, 1897, the private railway Fastow - Znamenka was merged with the South West trains. The state-owned railway route Kyiv - Korosten was on October 6, 1902 part of the Southwest railways.

In 1883, 293.5 km long railway Bendery - Galati (Romania ) is connected, even though she was not yet completed and operating at a loss.

The architect of the High O. and B. Kulikowski built 1888-1889 the administration building of the West Railways ( present address: Kiev, Lysenkostr 6. ).

1900-1902 400 km long distance Kiev was built ( Wolhynischer station ) Kovel.

On January 1, 1904, the railway had more than 50,000 employees.

In 1913 she had 3906 versts (old Russian unit of length of 1.066 km ) main routes, of which 1 349 versts twofold. There were 1480 steam locomotives, 31809 and 1650 freight cars. Management of the West consisted of railways track, traction, transport, telegraph, commercial, cost and material service. It had the Registry of the railway director an accounting, teaching department and a medical service.

On November 30, 1913, the route Proskuriw - Starokonstiantyniw - Shepetivka was put into operation. At the same time the construction was begun in order to Korosten to extend this route and to also build routes Shepetivka - Izjaslav - Laniwzi or Jarmolynzi - Husiatyn. They were completed in 1915-1916. Even in 1916 the route Korosten - Wystupowytschi - Mazyr was built.

After the end of World War more routes mainly local routes were built. So you created in 1925 the route Nizhyn - Chernihiv, Chernihiv 1928 - Ovruch, 1930 Chernihiv - Homel. Followed in 1931 by Woroschba - Orsha, 1935 Ovruch - Bilokorowytschi 1936 Fastiw - Zhytomyr and Kalynivka - Starokonstiantyniw. The 27 km route Zhitomir - Korostyschiw was built in the fifties years.

After that, only followed two routes: the freight railroad of the hydroelectric power plant Kiev ( in operation since 1961), which also took over passenger since 2010 and the route Kiev - Moscow Station - Myroniwka (operating since 1983).
