Sozina Tunnel

The 4,189 m long Sozina tunnel in the south of Montenegro is the longest road tunnel in the country. It crosses the mountain range Paštrovići which separates the Montenegrin Adriatic coast from the lowlands around the Skadar Lake. The southern portal is located near sutomore on the Adriatic coast, while the northern portal lies a few kilometers south of Virpazar at the foot of Paštrovići Mountains.

Construction

The cost of the tunnel were 70 million euros. It was opened on 13 July 2005, the Montenegrin national holiday, and is a toll road since July 15. The toll booth is located in front of the north portal.

Importance

As a direct link between the port city of Bar and the Montenegrin capital Podgorica the Sozina tunnel is an important component of the Montenegrin transport system and reduce travel time between the two cities over the up to 805 meters high mountain pass drastically.
