SPAD S.XI

The SPAD s.XI was a French military plane that was used in the First World War.

The success of the single-seat fighter S.VII prompted the company SPAD to give it a new attempt to create a two-seater pattern (a first as SPAD S.VIII designated design was still at the project stage addition ). So you took over in 1917 the draft S.VII, enlarged it geometrically and thus created the s.XI, which should come as a reconnaissance and artillery observers, but also as a ground attack aircraft used. The first machines met in August 1917 at the front and a number of French, American and Belgian squadrons were equipped with the pattern. In use, the type proved, however, difficult to master than powerful enough and by the pilot. At least in the French associations of the type was therefore discarded as early as July 1918.

As a further development emerged in 1918 nor the more powerful engines S.XVI with Lorraine -Dietrich 8Fb engine ( 235HP ), from her but was only a very small series built.
