Spalding County, Georgia
The Spalding County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Griffin, named after General L. Griffin, the first president of the Monroe Railroad.
Geography
The County is located in the central northwestern Georgia, and to the west about 90 miles from Alabama and has an area of 517 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Henry County, Butts County, Lamar County, Pike County, Meriwether County, Coweta County, Fayette County and Clayton County.
History
Spalding County was formed on December 20, 1851 96 County of Georgia from parts of Fayette County, Henry County and Pike County. It was named after Thomas Spalding, a member of the House of Representatives from Georgia and the first man from Georgia, which is known that he has harvested cotton and sugar beet.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Spalding County 58 417 people in 21 519 households, and 15,773 families. The population density was 114 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 66.50 percent White, 31.05 percent Black or African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.65 percent from other races groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.62 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 21 519 households out of which 34.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.3 percent were married couples living together, 18.2 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent of all households and 8.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12 persons.
27.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 to 24, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,221, and the median income for a family $ 41,631. Males had a median income of $ 32,347, women $ 22,114. The per capita income was $ 16,791. 12.4 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
