Spansion

Spansion is a US-based company that is engaged in the development and production of flash memories. The headquarters are located in Sunnyvale / California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Development departments of the company but are also found in Japan.

History

Spansion was originally a joint venture of Japanese electronics giant Fujitsu and the American semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (short AMD), which specializes in NOR flash memory, and already in 1993 as Fujitsu AMD Semiconductor Limited ( short FASL ) was founded.

The company was then under the entrepreneurial and technological leadership of AMD. FASL developed into a leading company in the very eventful flash industry. At times, it was the world market leader ahead of Intel.

In May 2003, then was renamed Fujitsu AMD Semiconductor Limited in FASL LLC and we extended the cooperation of. AMD and Fujitsu announced their entire Flash production from the FASL LLC and the new brand name Spansion it was established. In 2004, then was re- renamed Spansion as the new brand was very successful. During this time the company was very profitable and generated large profits, which notably AMD losses could offset from the processor division.

In 2005, however, there was a greater crisis in sales in the Flash industry and the end of 2005 was AMD then announced that it will spin off Spansion as an independent company because of continuing losses. Since 2006, Spansion is therefore a completely independent company.

Production

Spansion uses far only older production of AMD and Fujitsu, which, however, now fully owned by Spansion.
