Spassk-Ryazansky

Spassk- Rjasanski (Russian Спасск - Рязанский ) is a town in Ryazan Oblast (Russia) with 7745 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the southern part of the Meschtschoraniederung about 50 km southeast of Ryazan Oblasthauptstadt on the left oxbow Spassky Saton the Oka, a right tributary of the Volga.

Spassk- Rjasanski is the administrative center of the Rajons Spassk.

History

An existing since at least the 15th century, craftsmen and trade village ( Sloboda ) in place of the present-day city was first mentioned in records in 1629 under the name Waskina Polyana, also village Spassk. It was founded in the 15th century and in 1764 abandoned Savior Saretschenski Monastery ( Спас - Зареченский монастырь / Spas- Saretschenski monastyr ). The word spas for Redeemer went over to the place; Saretschenski, such as behind the river, refers to the position relative to the original, in 1237, destroyed by the Mongols under Batu Khan original city of Ryazan (later and still known as the village of Staraya Ryazan, Ryazan old ).

Culture and sights
